8-hour contract and training

My son has just been offered a minimum wage Christmas contract at Argos.
First point - they say he has to go and do a day's training for which he won't be paid - surely this is illegal?
Second point - it's an 8-hour contract, although they say he can work pretty much full-time if he likes and they like him. What are the implications of working 40 hours on an 8-hour contract, will it affect holidays and so on?
Finally, anyone worked at Argos, how are they in terms of flexibility when allocating shifts, as he already has a few other things lined up such as job interviews? Will he have to work weekends / chrsitmas eve / boxing day etc? They don't seem to have provided much information.

If its a Christmas contract I garauntee that he will be working weekends and Christmas Eve/Boxing day etc.
In terms of being paid for training, I know a few places that dont pay their staff for training.
If it's just a Christmas contract he probably won't be entitled to any holidays at all regardless of the amount of hours he works.0 -
I worked for Argos last year and was paid for training and for staff meetings.
Holidays are based on his base hours so 8 hours. Usually what happens are that they are paid when you leave.
In terms of shifts we used to get them Friday for the following week. If we had days we couldn't make we told manager as soon as possible they tried to accommodate them. However you were more likely to be accommodated if it was a weekday and the more notice you gave.
Finally in terms of weekends, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day these are the days they definitely want you for so I would expect him to be working all of these and any ones that he doesn't to be a bonus!0
