Advice please - Clarity Credit Management

Hi all - hope someone can help me, I know that the answer to my question is posted on a thread here somewhere but can't locate it.

I received this morning a letter from Clarity Credit Management asking me to call urgently regarding a personal matter.

Apparently an old debt of mine has been sold onto them, outstanding at present £1792.77. I do not recall taking out a loan, apparently Capital One through Halifax/Bank of Scotland. The loan was taken out 21/6/2000 and I apparently made payments up until February 2001. Other than that they can offer me no further information. I don't even know the original total loan amount.

I have not kept any bank statements etc from that period (moved home a fair few times) though I did bank at Halifax for a short period, and the address they have on file when the loan was taken out tallies up with where I was living.

I honestly cannot think for the life of me why I would have wanted a loan at that time as life financially was good (not great).

Obviously I have not admitted the debt, the lady I spoke to is going to send me a letter stating the details she has. She told me that as I am unaware of the debt, if I thought fraud was involved I should obtain a crime reference number.

I had only had two loans (can't remember who with) previous to this time but they were both paid off in full when I sold my house. My solicitor paid these immediately, as the house sale had gone through.

If I have totally lost my marbles and did have this loan, after this period of time should it have been written off anyway? ( Is it 6 or 7 years?)

What please, is the best way to tackle this? To be honest I am all with paying my debts off but with finances as they are now they are going to have a long wait on this one. (this is definately the last thing I needed)

Look forward to your comments

If this is the case the debt is now statute barred anyway.....

Meaning they'll have a tough time enforcing it. I'd wait for the letter (although I bet you'll not hear anything else about it) and if it does arrive, write asking them for a copy of the signed credit agreement. This usually makes whoever it is go away.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Thanks immoral-angeluk and oberonsh for your super quick replies.

I feel much better now knowing how to tackle this.
  • Hi,

I know this is an old thread but it was the only one I could find that mentioned this company.

I moved out of a property just over a year ago and closed my British Gas account - fully paid up - and moved to another address where I opened up a new British Gas account. I received an email last week from CCM stating I owed money to British Gas from my old property. I phoned British Gas who said it was for a period after I'd moved out - I'd forgotten to take my name off the electoral roll so they had found my name registered at that address and put the two together. I sent a meesage to CCM via a contact form (no email adress on thier website) but have received another email today with the request for money. They had an email address in their email this time so I have replied to them.

But what do I do? :confused:I don't want to get black listed - I've never missed a payment in my life and it's not my bill. Unfortunately, I got rid of my proof I'd left the property when it reached a year - but it is on British Gas records that I opened up a new account with them.

    Thank you for listening!

  • Speak to British Gas, you must have had some sort of final bill when you left the old property from British Gas, get a copy of it from them confirming it's been paid for the period in question and then send a copy of this to CCM with a covering letter.

There are template letters on here which pretty much tell DCA's where to go when it's not your debt.
  • This is easy to sort out though, all he needs to do is prove to BG that he moved out, especially if when he moved he then took out an account with them at the new address lol....

A swift strong warning to BG should sort this... pointless telling the DCA to swivel, cos they may add a default which would be pointless when he can get out of it....
    :o 2010 - year of the troll :o

  • Hi,

I spoke to British Gas last week and the woman said I had to let the credit agency know.

I did this and they kept asking for money.

I've just rang again and there were no notes on my account, despite being told one was written. They reckoned I was running two accounts at the same time! However, they have apologised and will close the account and inform the CCM, the guy said it shouldn't affect me in the future.

Hopefully this is the end of it. Thank you for responding
