DRO and overpayment refunds

Hi, I was granted a DRO in July. I've only just realised that EDF (electric) and BG (gas) haven't cleared the debt from euther meter. I've been in touch with EDF to see if I can get a refund (they'd had notice of the DRO but hadn't bothered adjusting the meter) they have said I can but it has to go back on the meter. Is this right, or can I ask for the cash? I haven't managed to get through to BG yet.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Yes, you have a right to that refund, it is money they should not have collected. Make sure it is not worth more than £300 to you as a lump sum, which may threaten your DRO.

  • Hi,

I had to top up and they've credited the meter despite me saying that I didn't want that, do I have any rights?

    Yes,

First you should ask for a refund (seems you have already done that).

Second you should send a letter, headed "Formal Complaint" and posted recorded delivery to your energy company highlighting the fact that the money should not have been collected, that it is yours and you would like it back. Place in your letter that should you remain dissatisfied you will refer your complaint to the fuel ombudsman.

Third, if you are not happy with their response, refer to the ombudsman, who will adjudicate and has the POWER to put it right.
