Stupid mistake, need help!

Hi, I've been struggling with debt since losing my job last year, stupidly I've been ignoring my creditors until I started a new job and could afford to start making payments. I started a well paid job about 6 weeks ago and things looked like they were on the up. My intention was to set up a DMP as soon as I started getting paid.
I have 3 credit card debts totalling £3000 and one bank default totalling another £3000. All of these debts have been sold to debt collectors (I think, as I said I've been ignoring them, what's done is done).
Now here is the most stupid part, I somehow managed to give my new employers the bank details for the account I defaulted on. They have made my first pay to this account. When I realised the mistake I contacted payroll to ask if they could recall the payment and have it paid into the correct account. Unfortunately they said all they can do is wait to see if it is returned.
I now don't know what to do, I've got rent due tomorrow and I'm not going to get new credit anywhere else, my friends and family can't help. As the account has defaulted and the debt sold to debt collectors, do you think the pay will simply be rejected or do you think the bank will swallow it up and take it as payment towards the debt?
I can't believe I made such a stupid mistake and now I'm not going to have any money to live on or pay my rent. Do you think there is anything I can do? Should I contact the bank and try to see if the account has been credited?

I would check to see if the money is in that account. If it is try and withdraw it either through cash machine or at the bank. Hopefully, the bank won't have realised. Hopefully someone else might come along and suggest something better. Good luck0

Hi,
Ask the bank, what've you got to lose?!

Did u have online/telephone banking.
Firstly, I'd try and log in online, if the money's there, transfer to another account.
If u don't have online banking, try calling and doing that over the phone.
If that doesn't work, go to the bank.
No idea what will happen though, sorry can't be of more usee to u0 -
FWIW, we had some benefit paid into a bank account we'd ditched, with a massive overdraft, it was with the Halifax, and I phoned them explained that it was essential for living on, paying rent and so forth, and they gave me it back. I was astounded. I spoke to some department on the phone first and they told me to go into the local branch, with a reference number, there the staff just took me to a back room, gave me the money and got me to sign a doc confirming that I'd received it. All done very pleasantly and with minimum fuss.

Thanks for all the advice. As advised I spoke to the bank (RBS) and they have agreed to release all the funds in branch tomorrow and set up a repayment plan for the debt. So relieved. Thanks again and thanks to RBS for being so understanding.0
