Asked to look for 8 jobs a week

From experience, some employers (small ones particularly) are getting royally P**sed off by continual approaches for jobs that are not advertised or available - predominantly due to JCP insistance for JSA purposes. They get to the point where enquiries by EMail or post are just deleted/binned without even being read. Nothing is kept on file - because there are too many. The only information kept tend to be applications from suitable candidates to advertised jobs - for future reference.
EXACTLY!!! This was my original point/worry taht in sending these unasked for cvs out to employers who do not have any jobs advertized at the moment they may get annoyed and may remember and then when thy do have jobs and i apply they may remember how annoying it was.0 -
funny you are trying to correct a post and making mistakes yourself, it was not 8 enquires but 4 application, 3 calls and send CV
He;s not really making a mistake tohugh you are just being pedantic...it's 8 action/8 jobs and I wasn't complaining...some weeks I do more than that but some weeks there are just no jobs suitable in my area so then i have to send out speculative cvs or go into places and ask about jobs...ALL of which I am happy to do if it gets me a jib but I was just commenting on how a lot of it coming from my advisor is just busy work.0 -

Their CVs went on the "pain in the a***" pile and if a job did come up, they were actually a bit less likely to get it than the average applicant (one even had a CV on file with a post it note attached saying "This woman is odd and a damned nuisance. Do not interview.")- and this was before the economic downturn. Other companies I've worked for recently are getting several CV's a day - they usually go straight in the bin. It's worth doing if it counts as an action for JSA - but it probably won't get you a job.
A better approach to speculative applications is to use people you know - people who already work at a company, get them to ask managers on your behalf whether there are any vacancies coming up because they have a friend who'd be really good (at the hotel I just mentioned, most of teh staff we employed were recommended to us by people who already worked there, or who were leaving and suggested a friend or sibling to take their place) . The personal link is much more likely to pay off than random spamming with CVs and letters.
Thanks for that..you ahve put it perfectly....that was my worry with the spamming of cvs esp as because I do live in a quiet area once I get to the end of all the places of course I could start again but those employers are going to hate me...we all hate spamming.0 -

Wasn't sure if the 4 applications had to be for jobs that existed (if so, that seems to have been missed in this thread) or just "Hello, I am writing to apply for a job within your organisation, if you have any openings" type letters.
Sorry for the confusion I was confused myself to exactly what my actions are...I must apply for 8 jobs and some weeks there are only say 4 that are suitable and so I send out AT least 4 more cvs taht week to make up my 8 but then I still go out and ask at businesses and send out MORE cvs every week. It's not like I am LIMITING myself to only 8 a week!!! LOL...thatt would be asinine.
Often when I go to see my advisor and she matches me with jobs I have to tell her I have already applied for those!
So then my worry is that I will run out pretty soon of places to apply to and then that 8 will seem like an insurmountable number unless I start sending out cvs to the same people. As I said hopefully I will not have that problem as I will have a job by then. I have only just signed on in the last 2 weeks so I am new to it all.0 -

I maybe being pedantic but you try eating when they stop your JSA when you tell them you didn't apply for 4/8 jobs a week but just sent of 8 CVs, try telling them they are being pedantic.
You were making a point that applying for a certain amount of jobs was hard for you, so it is hardly being pedantic pointing out to a poster that thinks any 8 actions meets the JSA agreement you have been given, when only applications would do, maybe you need to get a bit more pedantic if you want to carry on getting JSA and eating!0 -

I think it depends on the company a bit. The biggest companies the CV's go straight in the bin without being read - so it's unlikely they'll remember you. If you need to reapply to fulfil JSA quotas I'd stick with spamming the larger, more well-known businesses (even the ones too far to travel to - it's highly unlikely to land you with an interview, so why not just use them as a quota filling exercise, it's not as if you'll have to actually go there, so it's just the price of a stamp!). Smaller local business (like the hotel I mentioned) will not get so many CV's so more likely to remember your name and blacklist you for pestering - so those businesses I'd limit to just calling in once (in person - if they see you're a nice person and not a weirdo taht creates a good impression) and after that, just apply to them if a job is advertised.0
