CV Writing service

Hi All

Just a little advice please if possible. I have what I believe to be quite a proffesional looking CV, however im sure its not how employers see it and im probably not selling myself as much as I could. There are tons of companys offering profesional CV writing services. Most of these charge quite an amount for this service.

I was wondering have any of you used one of them, if so who and would you recommend them? Are there more cost effective ways of doing this?

Thanks K xx

    Yes, writing it yourself.

Seriously though, just spend a couple of hours looking at yours and at others (you can find a multitude of examples on the web). See if yours is missing anything.

You say you think you're not selling yourself as much as you could. If that's the case, at least you've identified it. Write a list of every skill you have and see if any are missing from your CV.

If it's cluttered, tidy it up. If you've only given job titles with nothing to say what you did there, change that. Make sure it's no longer than 2 A4 pages.

Just have a browse online, there is loads of help and advice. Honestly, don't waste your money going to a 'professional', I know it's hard and a pain but you can do it yourself.

  • If you were comfortable with doing so (and removing all personal identifiable data) then I'm sure there are some very capable people on here that would be willing to take a look and suggest possible improvements or amendments.
  • As a professional CV writer and without wishing to be offensive, judging from the original post you definitely need help, not least with spelling and grammar. If you were submitting applications online with as many typos as your post contains, you would almost certainly not be invited to interview.

CVs are scanned by Applicant Tracking Software which is seeking keywords relevant to each job advertised. It is important therefore that you include a good keyword match in your CV and these will be different for each and every job you apply for. One CV just doesn't cut it these days - not if you want interviews.

Additionally, recruiters are looking for evidence of your achievements. How did you contribute to previous employers' businesses? What are your key skills? What would be the benefit of hiring you? Why would you be better than the other candidates?

A professional CV writer can help you articulate your experience, skills and achievements and they will include industry-appropriate keywords as well as beautifully formatting and spellchecking your CV.

I agree that there are some "professional CV writers" who provide poor service. Indeed, one of my clients had used 2 CV writers before approaching me. I was appalled by the quality of the CVs they'd produced.

Personally I spend a lot of time interviewing my clients before I even begin to write their CV. By doing this I can usually identify skills and strengths that they didn't even know they possessed, and I can then build on these to create a truly credible and compelling CV.

My advice would be not to dismiss the idea of employing a professional CV writer but to do your homework thoroughly. Find out how they work... whether they're really interested in helping you or if they're just churning out generic CVs like a factory production line.

I have fantastic testimonials from my clients:T, proving that their investment was indeed worthwhile.

Good luck with your CV and with your job search.
