Best folding bike?

I am thinking about getting a folding bike to commute to work. But I would like to be able to have the option of still going on public transport, so I want a proper folding bike that really can be taken on the bus. Something like the Brompton or is there an other option as good?

For commuting on trains and buses there is nothing better than a Brompton. There may be cheaper options (a lot cheaper) but they are nowhere near as good.

The real killer feature of a Brompton is the fold, which only takes a few seconds to fold or unfold. When folded the bike locks itself into a package that won't unfold unless you want it to, so it is easy to carry along a platform, up stairs, etc. Other folded bikes are just a loose collection of bits when folded. Also when a Brompton is folded, all the oily bits are on the inside.

As for the ride, they are perfect for the sort of use most people put them to, which is a few miles to or from the railway station.

As for the price, Bromptons hold their price well so you can always recover the cost if you ever decided to get rid of it, but if your employer does the cycle to work scheme, that can help a lot.
  • Bromptons are meant to be the best folding bike around, but try and borrow one in advance to test it out - I find riding one far more tiring than riding a non-folding version, and I notice hills much more. I wouldn't fancy riding one more than two or three miles, and not over any gigantic hills.
