Gluten-free vegan gravy mix?

Can anybody recommend a gluten-free vegan gravy mix? I've read mixed reviews about Orgran Gravy Mix & Free & Easy Gravy Sauce Mix. Has anybody tried either of these?

I made some gravy the other day (stock cube, an onion, & cornstarch) & it wasn't that nice. It was pale & bland. I like gravy to look like real gravy (deep caramel colour), & the above brands seem to, but I don't know what they're like.

Thanks :)

This is how I do gravy (it's accidentally gluten free I think). Food process a peeled white onion until its pulp, then cook in a small amount of veg oil until softened. Add a tablespoon of cornflour, a 1/4 tsp mustard powder and a good glug of balsamic vinegar or mushroom ketchup. Mix until thickened and then add veg stock until at the consistency you want. It's delicious.

Thank you. This sounds absolutely delicious  Can you buy mustard flour from the supermarket? Do you strain it at the end, or leave it as it is (with onion pulp in)?

I leave as is - I really pur!e the onion so it's not at all lumpy. Mustard powder is easily found in any supermarket. Mushroom ketchup is a little harder to find but worth the effort.

Sorry to spoil things , but mustard powder isn't always gluten free - i think due to the milling process. A bit of dijon might work - but check the label for gluten free.

If not, bisto Best are gluten free - they do vegetable and caramelised onion gravy - they might be vegan.

If not, Marigold boullion powder ( free from section) and cornflour?

  • Thanks again. I made this yesterday & it was delicious  I used Coleman's mustard powder. So glad I didn't go ahead & buy the gravy mixes (prefer food made from scratch).
