How long does it take for a P45 to arrive?

My husband finished his seasonal job (Park Resorts) on 6th November and has received his last payslip. How long does it take to get your P45? The HB has been suspended until it arrives. All his work mates are in the same situation.

There is no fixed time I'm afraid. Sometimes they never do!

From an employment point of view it is not serious as you simply fill in a P46 instead.

I'd not realised there were benefit implications. May be better to ask the question on the benefit board as there might be a way round the problem.
  • The employer (or their accountant etc) create the P45 and so it is down to them how quickly they do it. They are required to give it you "as soon as possible" but there is no actual limit
  • well im still waiting for it. Weve only got 1 week left before we go into arrears with the landlord.

Did you get in touch with the ex employer? They're the only ones who can tell you how long it will take.

    I've just received a P45 from a job I did 4 months ago!

Are you on Job Seekers? If so that is evidence of not working at the minute. Even if you're not eligible for any money, you get your contributions paid and evidence to Housing Benefit people that you're not working.
  • Yes I got in touch with the employer about a week ago and they said they are "looking into it". I've not heard anything else back from them.

No were not on jobseekers, were on working tax credit and housing benefit. The housing benefit has suspended until the p45 arrives.
  • Can you ask the housing benefit people what they need it for and whether there is any other document that can suffice? For example, a copy of something that says when his contract is ending and the final payslip which shows income to date?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I've provided a letter from the employer saying the contract ended on 6th November and his final payslip showing the total amount he earnt in the year. It seems only the P45 will suffice.

Well that gives a bit of an impasse as it is very difficult to force an ex employer to provide a P45. This can't be a unique situation so there must be a solution.

I would suggest you contact HMRC to see if they can help.

Sounds very inflexible at your council offices. I didn't need to provide a P45 when I claimed. I'd keep updating the Housing Benefit people every few weeks if you haven't received it and ask if there's any alternatives if your employer takes their time. If you don't contact them within a month period they will close your claim, so make sure you keep in contact.
