Interviewer 2 hours late

I'm just posting to rant really. My daughter applied for the graduate programme with Deloitte. She passed the verbal and non verbal reasoning tests, half day assessment and competency interview and was put forward for an interview with a partner which is the final stage. When she arrived for the interview last week her name wasn't on the list at reception and she was asked to wait whilst they rang someone to see what was happening. An hour and a half later she reminded reception she was still there and they said they would call again. Finally, two hours after her interview time, she was interviewed by a different partner who knew nothing about her, had no copy of her CV or application, and was barely interested in the presentation she had been asked to prepare. The company admitted that they had made a mistake. The partner who was due to interview her had mis-read his diary and gone to a meeting.

My daughter has been in contact with graduate recruitment at the company, who have said that they do not yet know the outcome of the interview. Usually successful applicants are informed the same day, so she is not hopeful, but even unsuccessful applicants are told they should hear within 3 days, and its been well over that now. She worked so hard for this interview, spent hours working on her presentation, and I am really upset that she was put under so much stress and has now been left in limbo like this. She has already graduated and had applied for the 2012 intake. There was one place left available in the area she applied for, and we don’t think anyone else was interviewed for it at this time, since they were filling a slot and are now interviewing for 2013.

How very thoughtful of you. We all know life's not fair but sometimes a little understanding doesn't go amiss.

I would ask whether HR could set up the meeting again with the right partner

I don't blame you for the rant, I would be raging. Its an absolute disgrace that she was treated like this, it just goes to show what kind of mickey mouse operators get well paid jobs in big companies. I feelfor your daughter, it was a massively important interview for her she must be devastated.

Thank you Marlot. I had been wondering whether she could call and ask for another interview and your post gave her a bit of encouragement. She has just spoken to HR, who suggested exactly what you had said. They seemed to have already thought that themselves and said they had been discussing what to do, but I think they were perhaps a bit concerned about asking her to attend another interview. They are going to call back with a date, and she is hugely relieved that she is going to get a proper interview with the right person.
  • I feel for your daughter, to go through all that hard work and then to be treated like that.

But I think this speaks volumes about the company and I would question whether or not your daughter should be working there. She may have had a lucky escape!

Unfortunately the big 4 accountancy firms don't really give a toss about there staff, if what my previous work colleagues have told me is true!

That sounds like a good outcome, and I hope she's learned not to sit around for an hour and a half before chasing things up.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Goldman's used to get up to all sorts of tricks to check out the "mettle" of possible employees and see how they responded to situations.

A well known law firm made one applicant wait 2 days before starting the interview. He came in at 9am and left to sit in the interview room just told 'We will start the interview shortly', day ended, 'oh sorry got caught up with a big case, please come back tomorrow'.

He came back the day after with pack lunch and a book. End of the day came again, same excuse, 'please come back tomorrow'. He came and was asked the simple question 'Why did you come back?'.

A lot of people who are after the best of the best take great pleasure in coming up with horrendous obstacle courses.

I have every sympathy with your daughter. But instead of chasing up this role, if it were me, I'd be looking for somewhere else. They have treated her appallingly and have shown themselves to be very disorganised however much they are now trying to remedy the situation.
