It's a coalition. You are bound to get more U-Turns and bad policies as the two parties jossle for position with bribes needed to get stuff through.

You are so correct in what you say and I cannot believe that we, the electorate permit this to happen. Two wrongs never make a right.

I always thought that it was only during wartime that we should be governed by this method.

I'm not yet convinced that anybody will get to pay less. I'm even less convinced that anybody will get moved automatically to a cheaper tariff.

But of course one possible explanation for all this is that the Tories are in league with the suppliers, and the suppliers think the market is working too well for too many consumers.

I doubt they will get moved either.

On Channel 4 news they boxed Davey in the fact that, often, the most disadvantaged get penalised through the credit meter system. I must admit I thought they just got charged a premium rate per unit.

When my son took on his first Uni property their was a standing charge once he activated the account so even when the property was not used, no energy required, they were still having to feed the card. In this day and age I am surprised that pre paid electricity on a electronic medium does not have better tariffs available.

I know in our house we have all the insulation and efficiency measures in place that are realistically cost effective. We don't waste energy and I know there is only one direction for my bills. We are already on DDR/online and switch regularly.

I must admit I hadn't thought of the point raised in your last para.

"Cameron gets tough on ....." is a bit like that game "Simon says ... .do this, do that".

Half the time it doesn't mean he gets tough on anything - it means he backs down in a blather of words and goes home to think of some more things to get tough on.

Well the Beeb is already reporting that this will put prices up, and the government hasn't even made the announcement yet. Could be the pasty tax all over again.

Talking of pasty tax, which we weren't, if I buy a cooked chicken from Sainsbuys etc I have to pay +20% vat. By time I get to checkout and it's gone cold (ie below ambient temperature, whatever that is) should they zero rate it ?

I asked them but they refused - were they correct ?????
  • Social tariffs for utilities are a scandal. If it is necessary to subsidise those who can't afford heat and light it should be funded out of taxation. This would force the government to cut out waste of public money somewhere else if they didn't want to become even more unpopular. I suspect that a grubby little 'understanding ' is in operation whereby the utility companies do not make too much noise about this (or the windfarms etc) in exchange for the government not introducing proper price regulation. They all win, and get away with it -- we lose.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

I agree that social energy subsidies should be funded out of taxation. We pay it anyway as a stealth tax, but it helps hide the magnitude of the problem which is growing.
