Apprenticeship Help?

Im new here and not sure if this is in the correct group

I would really like to do a course starting from September, It is an apprenticeship.
Unfortunatly it is in a different city to the one i live so i would have to commute or move. Which on an apprentice wage would not really be possible so im wondering
Can you claim working tax credits while doing an apprenticeship?
Are there any other benefits i could claim?

Thank you in advance

  • You can claim housing benefit, but not sure about wtc. Your best bet would be to visit the website, they have online calculators to tell you what you'd be entitled to. It all depends on your personal circumstances, such as age, children, who you live with, whether you have a partner, etc. Good luck with the apprenticeship.

I am confused by the terms you are using - may be I don't know enough about apprenticeships.

You use the terms course and apprenticeship. Generally finding a course is not difficult - finding the employer for an apprenticeship can be.

How far down this line are you ?

Have you looked at the wesite - apprentices.org.uk or similar

Also if you are over 24 getting an apprenticeship can be really difficult as the employer has to pay for the training element

an apprenticeship is a course in a way i think as you go to college and you have to build a portfolio over a period of time..

I am hoping to do this via sheffield college, They help you find a placement. I am currently 23. The woman at the open evening said they have students older than this.

Im not far down the line at the moment as i am trying to work out if i would be able to sustain my self for the year untill the wage goes up

Still abit confused. It sounds like an educational course not an apprenticeship as you are now using the term placement. In an apprenticeship you are an employee of the business.

Many, many , many years ago I studied a Business HND that was a 'sandwich' course. 6 mths in college and then 6 mths work placement. I was always a 'student'.

I am not strong on benefits but I guess it's important to know if technically you are an employee or a student

An apprenticeship is completely different from a course. What course is it you are hoping to do?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

You need to be aged 25 or over and working over 30 hours per week to claim working tax credits (unless have children or disability)
  • I did an apprenticeship, and I had to find a job, then apply for the training. You are classed as being employed, as you will be required to work full time, and then to be released to college at arranged times. Therefore, the benefits agencies will process you as a worker not student, on a low wage.
If you are serious about it, then I suggest you act fast as after the age of 24 the government no longer fund you, and the employer would have to pay your fees (and understandably most companies are reluctant to do this).

Although you could take out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the cost of the course at level 3 or above from April 2013.
