Council Tax Payment

in Cutting tax
Hi Everyone, not sure if this is right place for this chat, so please advise me if it's wrong!
To cut a long story short, when I first moved in my new flat in February, there was some confusion with council tax payments and 2 of them were late.
This month, I though I had paid at the beginning of the month, but in fact had not. Silly I know, and I should had a direct debit set up.
I have just had a letter from the council now asking for the remainder to be paid in full (nearly £700). I don't have this amount, but have enough to pay the usual amount. According to the letter the option to pay by instalments has been removed.
The council office is now closed, so I can't chat with them but I wondered if anyone knows what options are available? Are they likely to be able to put a monthly payment plan in place?
And of course, I will be setting up the direct debit for this as soon as possible.
Thankyou in advance for your help and advice.

It would be at their discretion. At this stage you have lost the right to pay be instalments and they may insist on agreeing an arrangement only subject to a Liability Order being granted by the magistrates court.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thankyou for this CIS.
I'm hoping that I might be able to sort something out, and at the same time set it up as a direct debit. I know it won't make much difference to them, but I have never defaulted on a payment, they have all been paid, just a the couple I mentioned that were late.0
