Contracted hours less than advertised....

Hi,
I've just started with a large supermarket chain as a christmas temp and the job was advertised for 10 hours per week.
I'm on nightshift (between 10pm til 6am) and have done three shifts (although only one for the full shift - 7.5hrs) and have just got my payslip, which says that my contracted hours are 8 hours per week.
I obviously thought that I would get at least 10 hours per week, which would be more than JSA and hoping for extra hours, but at the moment i'm getting less than I did on JSA!
I'm going to ask tonight about it but my letter of acceptance only states the hours are 'variable' and suspect they will say that 8 hours is correct, even though it was advertised higher.
Surely if a job is advertised at minimum hours then this can't be correct and I can demand I get the minimum as advertised??
Any advice on this would be most helpful!
Thanks
P.S. Also I'm being taxed, even though I haven't worked since taking redundancy in Sept 2011!

You can demand whatever you like. If you are good they meet your demands. If you are an average worker they'll let you go.
You can get the tax back at the end of the tax year. They are taxing you on the emergency tax code as you haven't given them your P45 from the jobcentre or the P45 isn't complete.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
