Any tips on buying a record player?

My boyfriend has a fair bit of vinyl but no record player so I was thinking of getting him one for christmas, does anyone have any tips on where best to look, which brands etc, I know some now have USB to convert to mp3 but are they ok for playing the records or really just for converting the vinyl?
