Keeping Car warranty valid

I have just had to pay £200 to my local main dealership for my car's routine yearly service. I have been told I have to use this dealership and it's service costs to keep the warranty provided with my new car valid. I feel this makes me tied to the dealership and they can charge anything they like, when making a query…

On a related subject, if I were buying a car I don't think it would sway me much whether the car had been serviced by the dealer or an independent place. I'd want to see regular services, but unless it was something specialist or expensive (e.g. a Ferrari) then I'd be happy with a full history from independent garages.
