thats a good question, the HD only stores game save information and games downloaded from the playstation store.
Personally I have a PS3 which has a 120GB HD, I have put on my entire music collection (several hundred CDs) and not even used a tenth. I have not downloaded any games from the store so do not know how much this takes up. I would say if in doubt, get the larger capacity, then its there if you need it.

also consider that ps3 hard drives can easily be upgraded yourself - as its just a standard hard drive that is easily accessible (doesnt void warranty etc).. so buy around the 120gb mark with confidence, and if necessary buy bigger drive down the line... really depends how much video \ games \ music you may want to install directly onto it (although can easily stream from pc's\ laptops anyway).. so consider if the extra price for the higher storage is more than the cost of buying a separate drive down the line..

It's not 120gb people - it's 12gb. The new super-slim comes with 12gb HDD as one of the bundles.

OP - go for 500gb every single time. Or, at least make sure there's 100gb+. Plenty of games have mandatory installs which take up space, it isn't just saved data and downloads. 12gb for me would be gone in the first hour. I have a 160gb PS3 and it's at about 130gb full.

I wouldn't go for the 12GB model, as this space will be filled upo really quickly, and you won't be able to store much on the drive at all really. Although 500GB may not be necessary at least you won't have to worry about running out of space. As a previous poster mentioned, 100+ is probably the best way to go! :)
