I have spent just over £5 - inc £1.20 for an Independent, and ended up paying less than £4 when they knocked off the price of the paper.
I don't know if that is the 'official' policy, or just down to the individual member of staff on the till.

The cost of the paper can be included in your £5 spend. The discount is taken off after the total spend the same way as the 1p deduction you get when using your Waitrose card. Do remember to check that the SA has scanned the card which is at each till to get the newspaper discount.

You have to watch money off in Waitrose as they take some deductions before your final balance to pay - eg buy 3 meats for £10. so this can be difficult if you are trying to reach a certain amount if you have say £5 off £30 spend.

Mentioning multi purchases such as 3 for £10 meats - if you buy 3 items but one or more of them has been reduced you still receive the full amount of the discount.
