Rooted in' Rooted out, what does it mean

Dear all, in terms of downloading and running an App on an Android, what does 'Rooted in' and Rooted out' means, or is it Routed in?
My son says he cannot run an app because it is 'Rooted out'.

Probably means that the app will only run on a rooted handset, one that had had a process applied to get the use running in a more privileged context. It is the equivalent to being logged onto a PC as administrator - you can do more, but with that you can do more damage. Name comes from the admin account in Unix being 'root'. In /out means nothing specific, so is probably teen speak.

To 'root' a device isn't hard per se but it may invalidate your warranty or service agreement, and is rarely necessary at all - I am techie and have never needed to root any of my past 4 android devices for normal use, but I always buy at the very top of the market, so don't want to risk damage so seek alternative solutions.

In windows the highest privileged account holder you can easily get to is Administrator. In Unix the highest privileged account holder is root.

Android is based on Linux, so root (in small letters) is king.

rooted in, means administrator mode - unrestricted. Rooted out user mode - restricted rights and areas.

Google the phone's name and "how to root".
  • Should not we be asking the question about the "App"
I can't see why any consumer mass market app should require root access....given that all phones will by default have root access blocked.

All suggests to me the App is errrr suspect/dodgy

Since when did an Android police force exist?

Never heard of something as innocent as system tuning then?
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

their ARE legitimate apps that require root access, these are usually utility apps rather than productivity or game apps.

My Nexus 7 has 3 apps that I use all the time that require root access
    1) AdAway "an add blocker" requires root to edit the "hosts" files
    2) SetCPU it let's me tweak the speed of the CPU in the device for better battery life.
    3) StickMount an app that lets me access USB sticks and drives when plugged in to the nexus.
