If you were asked to leave your current job straight away would you not be able to start the new one sooner? And even if the current job witholds pay (unlawfully as Uncertain says) could you ask the new job to pay you weekly for a few weeks?

Possible but as the new job is in a brand new shop I'm not sure if they need me to start straight away.

We'd arranged I'd start when my notice is finished.
