Best software for printing your own cards?

I want to create my own Christmas (and birthday cards) on my PC and print them using my own printer. There are a lot of sites which offer to print the cards for you (for a price) or just set designs. Can anyone suggest the easiest way to just create your won, to your own size card and print at home? At the moment am thinking of using Word but wonder if there is anything whiich might be better/easier?
