It's decision time. Below our criteria. It seems that as always a load of new models are hitting the market. So have we missed any decision factors and what boiler might you recommend? Any thoughts as always greatly appreciated

We have hard water and a need for a quiet running boiler.

The house is an 83 semi about 80 sq meters with insulated loft and walls and double glazing. Three radiators and one towel rail rad.

Only two people. No bath but a shower. We do not demand running the shower and hot water in the kitchen at the same time.

The gas supply will be rerouted as the boiler is in the kitchen but the new one will be in the airing cupboard - so gas pipes not an issue.

A programmable thermostat is needed but yet another remote

  • We got a Worcester Bosch and are very happy with it. My suggestion would be to get a bigger boiler than you need. The price difference on boiler size is actually quite small. In my opinion, if you are go spend £2k on a boiler, might as well spend £2.3k on a bigger one and never have to worry about over working it, or having too much hot water running at any one time.

Do you already have a combi? You mention an airing cupboard, so presumably you currently have a hot water tank and a conventional boiler?
If not, is your gas pressure and pipework and water pressure/flow even suitable for a combi?
What rating are you looking for?

    Thanks guys for the input.

Happy Days: point well taken :)

MXShuggy: It's about 7000 Watts according to internet calculators. But the output from the 4 rads is about 7000 Watts and this is more than sufficient.

macman: Pre checks as to combi suitability are complete so I am now at stage 2- looking at which one. Current system is as you assume and thus being a small house the freed up space will add great value.

I wouldn't count on that, a lot of people do not like combi's: their requirements may be different when you come to sell.

And if I thought there was going to be a shortage of gas I might install a coal fire! ;) - which has nothing to do with the question I asked.

Macman do you have a combi mental hang up?

  • If you want a quiet boiler try a Remeha. I've fitted these and keep getting complaints they're not running they're so quiet. They've been updated now so the controls are easier for the customer. I haven't had any problems with them, fitting them or servicing. None have broken down yet and I've found their after sales service good.
  • Intergas HE24/18 for what you have described.

    Tx for the suggestions guys

and for a bit of fun (I will have it professionally checked) I calculated gas pressure/pipe diameter.

The pipe is 22mm and runs 8 meters. It has a U out the top of the meter, two 90 degree turns, and one 90 degree into the boiler.

There is no other demand on the gas.

I reckon that should be ok having looked at a few tables of calculations but I could be so wrong :D

Anyone care to hazzard a guess that I can avoid 28mm upgrade and xtill have a purring happy boiler???
