Hi, we have very luckily just had a beautiful little boy. I am keen to get him some homemade clothes, a bit like grandma used to make!!

Please could anyone point me towards somewhere I could order these. Will not be lots but maybe a couple of hats, couple of jumpers etc. (I love stripes and would like some matching mum, dad and baby hats!!)

Cost not too much of an issue but very keen for it to be baby friendly material and would love there to be a personal or social enterprise angle rather than large company.

Thank you very much in advance

Congratulations! You might find that a local wool or craft shop has ads for crafty people who would do the cardis to order!
but make sure that the parents are up for them as my dil never used any of the wool jumpers etc as they were too warm for baby! They are not very outdoorsie!!!!:D

Ok, thanks. Agree re making sure they are right, that's one reason I'm keen to get the right material - don't want acrylic.

He'll definitely be spending time outdoors!

Please remember that 'pure wool' for baby items can be a bit 'itchy' for some babies - it can also be 'a bit of a faff' to wash and dry without ruining the garment.

Some of the so-called 'acrylic yarns' on the market nowadays is lovely and you wouldn't necessarily be able to pinpoint it and say 'that's acrylic' without very close scrutiny.

Definitely check with some of the woolshops and ask the staff in there. Even if they don't have a card in the window, they might know somebody personally.

Check out your local car boots (real car boots, not pseudo-markets with traders). I've seen plenty of hand-knitted cardis, jumpers & hats for sale around here - but I would agree with the above poster that acrylic is better for babies, not only is it less scratchy but it's also far more washing-machine friendly ;)

I did knit some hats for our boy myself :) but most of his hand-knits have come from his Nanna. OPm I take it you have nobody in your family that can help?

  • I love Rowan Yarns and debbie bliss patterns for babies and kids. I must admit the couple of gorgeous wool items I knitted my boys hardly wore as they were too itchy. Cotton yarns are gorgeous. I even knitted a denim one which complimented dads rowan denim sweater. Rowan is pricey but if you can afford it you may find some knitted up samples for sale in their stores.

I am another one that would not use wool on a baby to itchy in most cases and uncomfortable for the baby.

Many acrylic yarns are lovely and soft and much easier to launder and more gentle on the little ones skin.

Ebay has a huge number of smal sellers that sell handknitted baby items from hats and mitts to cardis and all in ones.

Try your local hospital for the League of Friends shop - they often sell hand knitted clothes.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

I've seen beautiful handknits for babies in charity shops. They looked as if they have never been worn.

Knitting is quite fashionable now so somebody in your family probably does knit and most people like doing baby things as they don't take long so it's worth asking around . I always knit something for new babies in my family but then I'm a compulsive knitter.

Hobbycraft had their yarn on offer for three for the price of two last week. The offer may still be on.I got some Rowan yarn for a jumper for DD .
