Can I request a tax return to complete?

I am employed and get the usual P60 every year but for a couple of reasons I was wondering if I could complete a tax return. I think there may be allowances I could claim and I also think the Finance Dept at my work are pretty incompetent.

Yes, just phone your tax office (have your NI number handy) and they will talk you through which bits of the form you need and send it to you.

Please remember that once it has been sent you must complete it and send it back before the due date, usually 31 January, you cannot choose not to complete it once a return has been issued.

Don't know. I've filled them in, in the past and had refunds.

OK my return this year was simpler, so no refund. And told no need to fill one in ever again.

But I expect next years to be more complicated again. So will be asking.

I'm sure they must let you.

The best thing to do is download one from the Inland revenues website and complete it that way. If your a higher rate tax payer it may be possible to obtain extra allowances if you pay into a pension scheme. (instead of paying 40% tax you pay 22% to the equiviliant amount of your pension contributions)
If you can't say something nice - SHUT UP :p

The forms are here but you might be able to get the allowances you want by filling in a simplified version, which is much easier.

Thanks everyone. If I ask for one now, would I be claiming for 2003 - 2004? This seems to be what is on the website. Or am I too late for that now?

Wife had to fill in three years worth this year. Apparently the didn't know we moved seven years ago!

I beleive you can claim refunds for up to five years ago.

    Good luck.

Although the site says 2003/04, if you load the SA100 tax return it is for the year ended 5 April 2005. We are only a few days into the tax year and the website isn't fully updated.

If you want to claim for 2003/04 you can still do so.

    Good luck icon7.gif

I noticed that I wasn't getting all my allowances so I phoned them up and they went through the questions with me on the phone then sent me the completed form to sign. I was pleasantly surprised when they sent me a rebate going back to 2001.
They told me that I should have been claiming each year. I shall do from now on!!!!!
