Panasonic breadmaker-Bread not rising

Hi!

I have a panasonic breadmaker, SD253 I've been using for nearly ten years now.
The last few times I've baked bread in it the bread has not risen properly. The flour is fresh, the yeast is fresh, everything is fresh, but there's little/no rise.
Now, I'm quite prepared to accept that after 10 years my breadmaker owes me nothing, and may well be on it's way out, but I'm loath to admit defeat and throw it out before I've had an ask around to see if anyone else has had this problem and if they were able to sort it out. So.....
Has anyone had this problem? Can I take the machine apart and fix the problem if it's mechanical? Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced bread machine if it's not fixable? x jeannie (of the brick-like bread)

  • I wonder if it is heating up properly? Does the breadmaker get warm on the outside? Can you lift the lid and find out?

I've found my bread has been better when just using the dough setting on the BM and then rising and cooking in the oven.

Bread was often quite heavy when cooked in the BM.

Same problem on our Panasonic. Bread had always risen OK, but recently loaves started coming out rather flat & brick-like. Decided to do some investigations so put a loaf on while I was busy in the kitchen & found that it didn't seem to be mixing that well, which I think must be pretty necessary to activate the gluten, etc. After that loaf was finished, I discovered that the paddle was turning but was rather stiff so I poured a bit of boiling water in & twizzled it around till it loosened up. Next loaf better but not perfect, so have started adding extra water, about 20-40ml, & warming it up with a splash from the kettle. These are now coming out more like how they used to.

  • Right, having investigated the problem, cleaned out the breadmaker, used the advice on here, (added extra water etc) I used both my usual recipe making bread with fresh yeast, and a newly bought bread mix on separate days, the problem is in the second rise.
The first rise goes fine, bread well risen and as it should be, the second rise.... well, fails to really. The breadmaker is warm throughout as it should be. I then get a loaf half the size with sort of "devil's horns" on it as it has clearly risen.
May find myself taking my machine for a service, but trying to be mse about it......
