Help with Blank DVDs

I want to buy blank DVDs and CDs for music but am very confused about formats and speeds. I have two cheap DVD players which don't say if you can play DVD-R or DVD+R.Am I safer going with DVD-R and do you need to format them or anything. I have also noticed that sometimes it says about different speeds . What does this mean and how important is it ?
Also should only be buying certain types of CD if I want to play music ?

have a read here
you may also want to look at https://www.vcdhelp.com and click on the dvd recorders link on the left. It should tell you there what type of disks your recorder will work with0
