Can't get rid of fleas!

My cat has had fleas since the summer, when they first started I managed to get rid of them with Frontline on the cat and spray in the flat but they came back and now they won't go, even using the same treatments.

My cat doesn't go out at this time of year, she's quite old and doesn't venture out much anyway. My skin is sore all the time with the fleas and its making me feel awful but nothing seems to be getting rid of them.

Can anyone help?

  • Our shih tzu recently had stubborn fleas but he is now flea free *celebrates*

We found frontline absolutely useless! we have however found that Bob Martin flea tablets and droppers are amazing!

One tablet, wait one hour then brush with a fine comb on day one then one tablet, wait one hour and then bath then once dry use a flea prevention dropper (lasts 12 weeks) on day two and he is now free of the little bugs :)

I would check they do a cat version then try that. Like your cat our dog goes out very little (plenty of time in the garden and a few longish walks a week). We have also bought a house spray which I will be using on the carpets and sofa and importantly pups bedding this weekend/early next week.

Hopefully a board guide will be able to move this thread to the pets forum where you will get more specific answers :)

I had the same problem last year with my cat.
We got rid of the Frontline, and bought Advantage instead, and also you need to treat your house using a spray such as Acclaim.

Last year we had the same issue. We were over run.

We only have Frontline treated indoor cats (medical conditions and RSPCA required) so heavens knows how it got so bad.

In the end we had to switch to stronghold, all four had to have flea injections and we had to boil all fabric as well as treat the house with a killer spray from the vet.

We had to move ALL the furniture and treat carpets.

By the time we repeated treatments, washing and vacuuming it felt like it was a full time job for about a month.

Got all the blighters in the end though :D

Ps the vet thought fleas had become resistant to frontline because of the extent of customers coming in with the same issue but advised there was no actual proof to confirm his conclusion

    Hi
I also have had this problem in the past. I sprayed all of the floors with Raid bought from local supermarket where the fly killer etc is. (cheaper too)
Its the red can and says Ant and Cockroach killer and all bugs.. I found it worked a treat. Make sure you spray all the edges of floors and corners as this is where they like to hide.
I then regularly kept a spray bottle with washing up liquid diluted in hot water and sprayed every so often as washing up liquid kills fleas. (if you get a flea and put it in diluted washing up liquid it will die) advice from the vet.

    Hope this helps.

Loads of people having massive infestations with Frontline, try switching to a veterinary product like Advantage or Stronghold. Also respray the house using a quality product like Acclaim or Indorex, be sure to do all floors hard and carpeted, inside the sofa, right into the corners of the room, move ALL the furniture, Spray your car if you have one, hot wash all fabrics where possible. If you have carpets in the corridors of your apartment block you might want to treat the parts nearest your front door because eggs will walk in and out on your shoes.

Please don't use Bob Martins, at best they are ineffective at worst toxic.

  • hi, I had a similar problem in the summer. Using Frontline but that wasn't working so switched to Advantage drops for my cat and sprayed the carpet daily for a week or so and the problem was solved (for now anyway :-/)
I've heard people say that Frontline isn't as effective as is used to be, wether this is true or not, I don't know, but the advantage worked for me.
I also 'nit combed' my kitty daily to get the little beggers off him quicker!
  • You better see a vet. My vet used Frontline on our dogs and the fleas never come back.
