can anyone tell me what tax code ---- 878L W1 is please?
its the W1 at the end i dont understand

    It is a non-cumulative tax code. You get 1/12th or 1/52nd (depending on whether paid monthly or weekly) of your annual allowance per pay packet with no reference made to previous pay. In some circumstances this can lead to an overpayment or underpayment of tax. Have you just started a job ? Did you hand over a P45 or P46 ?

    leaving aside the W1 issue 878 seems a very high code.

    The standard 12/13 code is 810. Anything above that means you are getting extra allowance for something - most commonly expenses in employment.

    I would recommend you check your tax code to make sure all the items in it are correct. If for example as the above reply suggests you have recently changed jobs you may be being given an allowance for expenses in employment which no longer apply.
