can they make me work more than contracted hours?

my partner has been in her new part time job for a few months now. she was supposed to be on 16hrs part time which suited our needs as i work shifts. they are giving her 25 to 30 hours a week but has been told she is only entitled to holidays for her 16hr contract. can they make her work more than 16hrs every week? thanks.

I would of presumed her contract would of had a clause in it expressing the need for extra hours when needed if it hasn't then I would probably say no they can't.

Initally her holiday pay would be based on her contracted hours but would think that extra working hours would accrue extra holidays pro-rata??

If the contract doesn't say that overtime is compulsory then she doesn't have to do it. But if she doesn't do it it's likely that she will be sacked so think carefully before refusing.

No, they can't "make" her BUT as she hasn't been there 2 years, they can legally sack her without having to give a reason.
  • thanks for replies. ill check the contract.
  • As people have said, it depends on the contract. As for holidays, we just get an hourly rate with no holidays accured but it goes to time & a half and double time after so many hours.
