Leather wallet - I think! Can anyone tell me more about it?

Comments

  • Could it be for keeping jewelery in like a jewellery roll?
  • Many thanks for the input.

Someone thinks that it might date back to the 18th century and that it most likely would have been used used for holding important papers and money by a wealthy gentleman.

    An thoughts on that?

    Cheers.
  • Hi all (again)

Just an update on this. I sold it on ebay for £20 recently. The chap who bought it made out that he bought it for himself, but it turns out that he got it to sell on. He has listed it as "Georgian Gold Gilt Leather Wallet c1730". And with a few hours left to go until the auction ends, it is currently at £51!!!

    The plot thickens!

I see that seller has negative feedback for describing something as 18th century when it wasn't

I'd be happy with the £20, knowing I sold it honestly.

  • Absolutely, I'm happy with what I got for it and like you say - I sold it honestly, making it quite clear that I did not not its age or what it may have previously been used for....

I do feel for the person who bought it though if they have bought it based on the potential mis-information of the seller.

seller is also falsely registered as a private seller on ebay- so a bit dodgy anyway.

edit: just noticed how very very dodgy seller is, selling 'silver' items when they are not hallmarked which is an offence in the UK

I sell in similar categories to that seller and used to report unregistered businesses, but nothing ever got done so I gave up.

As for the silver issue, that is actually quite serious though, but I'd probably just leave it be.
