Teac TV - remote won't work...

My son has a Teac TV in his room, and the remote has stopped working. I have taken it apart, cleaned the battery contacts & button pads, but to no avail. And new batts, of couse.I have tried a universal remote, with all the correct codes for Teac, but can't get the tv to turn on. It just has a rocker switch on the back which turns it from off to standby, but there seems to be no way of turning it on manually. If I could turn it on, then I feel I may have a better chance of linking it up with the universal remote! Of course, it may just be that the remote is ok and the tv is faulty...
Any ideas please?!

Do any LEDs come on when you turn on using the rocker switch?

Doe it have any buttons (or graphics indicating buttons) on the TV, like channel up or down? Sometimes if there's no standby switch, pressing a channel up or down button (if present) can switch it on on the TV. Try pressing channel up and then channel down for a few seconds to see.

Found some more control buttons on top edge - couldn't see them because of shelf above! Can control most functions with these, although it means tilting the tv forward to get at them. Still can't get the universal remote programmed, though...

You haven't placed anything in front of the TV which could be blocking the IR path to the sensor? Like a small ornament, or a sticker even?

Or - have you any energy saving lamps switched on in the same room which could be interfering with the IR signal? Have you tried the remote in daylight with no lights switched on?
