JSA/40 hr wk requirement

Hi. Just filling out jsa form online and see that they expect you to be available to work a 40 hr wk unless exceptional circumstances. I have been off work with work related anxiety and depression for over a year, been on ESA but this has stopped now. I have just taken vol severance to finish my work situation which was making me worse. Feel able to start looking for job but don't think I'm at stage of doing a 40hr wk as I still have depression but wanted to try p/t work. Will jsa refuse me the benefit as I don't feel able to work 40hrs?? Thanks.

If you are not actively seeking work you won't get jsa, does anyone work 40 hrs a week now anyway ( apart from me and a few other mugs)

40 hours is only 9-6pm is it not?

I had to sign an agreement just the other week to say I have to look for work 24 hours a day as the jc adviser told me accounts offices operate 24 hours a day and if I want a job in accounts I have to be prepared to work shifts!

40 hours is what you have to agree to work. That wont stop you apply for 16 hors or 20 hours etc but you have to have a valid reason to want to work part time like having children under a certain age I think

They just want you to be willing to apply for jobs at 40 hours. You can apply for more jobs that are 20-30 hours more than 40 hour a week jobs. But they may find you are not doing enough to find work if you refuse to apply for jobs at 40 hours a week.

Best bet is to talk to your advisor when you sign the job seekers agreement.

I thought 40 hours was still the standard working week for the majority of people in this country, any job I have had you work more than the 37 average hours per week.

I do 26 hours per week and probably earn more than someone on minimum wage doing a 40 hour week. I say limiting yourself to only 40 hours per week is futile as anything over 16 hours per week you need to sign off, which is all what anyone wants to do and end the hassle of the jobcentre and the many rules they put in front of you.

This is something you will need to discuss with your adviser. It is possible to restrict your availability to less than 40 hours per week in certain circumstances, a disability or long standing health condition is one such criteria. You will need to agree with the JC the maximum hours you are prepared to work and in all circumstances this must be for at least 16 per week.
  • As per Sues48 if you have disabilities ask them if you can be referred to a Disability Adviser. In certain circumstances the 40 hour requirement can be reduced. Any Adviser (not just Disabilities) can agree to this but you depends on your exact situation. 16 is unusual but yes it's the minimum.

If where you live is anything like here getting a 40hr per week job is like finding hens teeth so I would't worry, You have 2 hurdles here, finding a 40hr per week job and then actually getting the job.
