Moorcroft and non-existent Virgin Media debt

Options
Hmmm. I am having problems with them pursuing a debt to Virgin Media which Virgin say does not exist.

To be fair to Virgin they have handled my complaint quite well (I still want compensation but that's another story), but Moorcroft have been very slippery indeed. I have been recording my progress in my blog here in the hope that when I do get a resolution it will provide some pointers for dealing with a bogus debt like this:

I feel that there needs to be legislation to prevent the endless selling on of debts without evidence of the money being owed in the first place. I wonder how many people cough up to get rid of the nuisance? I could, but I won't and I have made it clear that I will not respond to them until they have secured an order from a court requiring me to pay them.

    Hi

This should be a new thread really (the board guides might oblige).

I listened to the recording on your blog and I think that the Moorcroft guy behaved quite well. The problem is that Virgin media have instructed them to pursue you for payment at the same time as confirming to you that no service was ever installed!

I do think that Virgin should compensate you for the c0ck-up, and I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

    Thanks,
I will report back when I have some sort of resolution.
Still pursuing Virgin Media as they owe me money.

I should explain that this is annoying me so much because I recently bought a repossessed property and am already dealing with several DCA's chasing the previous owner, one of whom will not take no for an answer!

It would be good if they did take court action against you as you could do a counterclaim.

No chance of that though, even though you will probably get letters from Moorcroft's 'pre-court division'
  • Just to update this.

    Received two letters today:

One from Moorcroft stating they have contacted Virgin Media, who have (once again) confirmed that I owe the money.

One from Virgin media confirming I owe them nothing and that they have recalled the debt from Moorcroft.

Are Moorcroft lying to try and get me to pay them money? Remember, they have already admitted that the money was to be aid to their account not Virgin Media. I don't know, but I have reasonable doubts that they have ever spoken to Virgin Media about this account.

The main issue now is that Virgin have failed to compensate me for my time and phone calls dealing with their error since July. They have also not given me an undertaking that they will not register a default against me at a credit reference agency. This is what I am really concerned about because there are reports online of them doing this to other customers who were not in debt to them.

I am going to write again to Virgin asking them for that undertaking and see if it gets me anywhere. Compensation I can deal with via other means potentially.

Here is the real issue though - I am in good health, articulate and capable of standing up to this sort of thing. There must be other people not as fortunate as me who cave in and agree to payment plans for money they don't owe because they get scared or can't cope with it.

There is a REAL need for regulation of the debt industry. Force the DCA's to pay money into independent adjudication rather than into bonuses spent on private fishing lakes, horse stables and other luxuries (as is apparently the case with the bonuses paid to the directors of Moorcroft over the past few years).

They are either lying or monumentally incompetant.

    Knowing Moroncroft, either is possible.
