Once you are discharged show Barclays this and they should then set up phone/internet banking for you.

I would avoid setting up joint accounts or loans until the bankruptcy is off your credit report. 6 years after your BR date.

I've no idea why Barclays don't allow internet access for undischarged BR's, seems bizarre to me! Once discharged they usually set the system to allow you internet access.

Co-op cashminder accounts come with internet access but they don't accept undischarged new customers so you've missed the boat on that one by not opening the account pre-BR.

Yes no joint finance or financial links until the BR is off the file, 6 years from BR date.

Well their policy is (or was) to not allow it until you are discharged. Unless that has changed, then you were fortunate.

The rules are no internet access with Barclays while undischarged, however I have seen a few people escape the net! Staff in branch have no clue tbh

  • when i opened the account i was completely honest and the girl was also confused as to whether i would be allowed it but said she'd apply for it for me anyway. i got it no problem. this was in february of this year. i was discharged in June this year. i wonder if i can now upgrade to the next account up from a basic one?

hey, PippaGirl, have co-op changed their policies on this? Back in march, the co-op allowed me as a brand new customer (never had a co-op account before), and as an undischaged bankrupt, to open my co-op cashminder account which I use now.

As for banks.. i've been delighted with the co-op. Not only, when I ran into further trouble at one point this year, did they not take the account off me following a number of failed direct debits and momentary negative balances, but they really are superb for customer service, and obviously (not that this should really be your priority when you have enough going on but...) are a great ethical choice anyway.. barclays, not, being, known for ethics!!

But, the ethics of the investments the bank makes should be the last thing, just a notional thing really!

I do think its ridiculous that barclays doesn't offer the tel/internet banking services that I use with co-op (actually I dont use tel banking with them, but certain internet banking)... surely these services are of no notable overhead cost to include with the account, and increase the chances of you managing your account well..

Either way, good luck, and yeah, I just know in March the co-op did let me open a new cashminder account whilst undischarged, newly bankrupt.. but as per PippaGirl's comment, maybe things have changed since then.

    All the best x
  • Yes Co-op changed their policy a while ago, it's all in the sticky at the top of the forum on basic bank accounts.

  • Ah I see, sorry I should have checked through what was already there! that is a shame but, well, thanks for highlighting that point, I'll try to have a read of things now actually.x
