But the banks are made of marble,
With a guard at every door,
And the vaults are stuffed with silver,
That the farmer sweated for.

I just had a 'small' car (Fiat Punto) for the weekend from Hertz for £33.99, unlimited mileage. It was £41.99 for 2 days, and got £8 back via QuidCo. Very efficient pick-up and drop-off in Leeds city centre...
Conversely, I got a car with Enterprise last month and it took 50 minutes to pick up and 45 minutes to drop off... I was fuming by the end of that particular escapade.

hi,
can anyone recommend cheapest van hire service in birmingham.
Thanks in advance0 -
I used these people to rent a car for 3 calendar days, and really liked them as the clock starts ticking from the moment you collect the car, not at 12.01am on the day. For example, I picked up the car at 6.30pm on Friday, returned it before 6.30 on sunday, and was charged for 48 hours, and not for 3 calendar days like some other companies tried to do.
They were also the cheapest I found at short notice near to my office.

Not sure how the prices stack up if picking up a car / van in other parts of the country though.Lead me not into temptation - I can find it perfectly well all by myself0 -

Hiya,
Few tips to minimise cost of car rental from whoever you take it.
Young driver is normally classed as under 25 - it can be expensive on long hires. Young driver charge varies dramatically from car rental company to car rental company.
You must also have had your license over a year for most car rental companies to rent to you.
Found out what your damage excess is - most places it is 500 pounds can be reduced at an extra cost it is VERY well worth doing. If you damage the car some places will charge you up to the 500 of you c.c - some will not only charge the damage but the rental lost while it is off the road this can be pricey.
Many local firms use large companies for there car hire so you hire through joe blogs but pick up a europcar/alamo/hertz car ... these sometimes have better deals than the name people they use as they have very good contracts with the big suppliers and often they have there own damage excess insurance which is cheaper than the main car rental companies.
If you sign that you want damage excess insurance you will be charged for it and you will NOT get it back if you have signed the rental agreement. If you dont want it make sure they dont add it on the paperwork! double check everything you sign.
Take into account the cost of extras i.e child seats (never guranteed) these can be expensive.
CHECK CHECK CHECK the car for damage when you pick it up - get them to note EVERYTHING on the paperwork. DO NOT let them tell you they will add it on later if they forget you become liable for someone elses damage.
If they refule the car it is expensive - the petrol is expensive and sometimes they will charge you for the person actually filling it up. So it is much better to take it back with a full tank (if that is what your agreement requires not all do!) than let them refill it. Some places you pay for the full tank upfront so dont need to fill up when you return it - check what you have to do you dont want to fill it up at your expense when you dont have to!
I worked for a large car rental company for 3 years as a manager - i also handled c.care and the two biggest fianical complaints we had was being charged for damage you didnt want! and being charged for insurance people then claimed they never asked for. The above tips will minimise the risk of this - and do keep all paperwork incase of dispute.
If you take any seats of of a passenger minibus van etc.. and you do any damage to them or the van taking them in or out or carrying anything you will be charged and this is expensive! Even if the seats come out it will probably state in the rental agreement you are not allowed to do this - dont get caught out ... i have heard stories of people being charged there full 500 cause they took a seat out to get more luggage in and damaged the vehicle this way.
Most car rental companies have good offers shop around on the net and ring around- many places will price match. Place i used to inhouse for has long gone (18 months) so dont know who has the best deals - one of there major competitors was holidayautos..... dont know if they are still goodDebt free May 2016 (without the support of MSE forum users that would never have been possible - thank you all)0 -
This company are ok https://www.apexrental.co.uk they do good deals for weekend use, but you have to collect after 1600 on the Friday and return before 1000 on the Monday to qualify0
