    a few facts would help
  • You should get a new tax code issued which will show an underpayment being collected. More tax will then be deducted from your salary each month. Your tax code should revert to normal the following year. Without more details I can't specify which tax years will be affected.
  • clapton, all the facts you need are in the post P.A.Y.E tax payer ,and paid too much ,what other facts can be relevant ?
  • Well, you asked "why", and without knowing a few facts, nobody can tell you why it happened.

For example......did you receive a benefit such as medical insurance or a company car?

Did you have income from elsewhere that was not taxed, or was incorrectly taxed? This could be bank interest, pension, 2nd job.

Have you checked your tax for the year in question and ascertained that you did indeed underpay?

    which tax year
    what were your gross earning
    what was your tax
    what was your tax code
do you have any benefits in kind
do you pay into a pension
any unpaid tax from the previous year
any change of job or JSA

other than that your post was pretty comprehensive
