Agency worker...paid through payroll company?

Hi
I am working as an agency nurse and have just signed on with a new agency. They dont seem to offer to pay me direct, wanting me to be paid through a payroll company. They have sent me forms to complete but I notice that it says there is a charge..I have to contact the company direct to find out what this is. Can anyone explain to me the benefits (and downs) of doing it this way? I will not have "expenses" as I only plan to work locally. The "advisor" from the agency was very vague about all this and only asked if I was self employed. I do a Self assessment for tax as We own property which we rent out. Can the company insist that I get paid like this and what would be the issues of being paid as self employed? I have tried a google search but cannot seem to get clear answers . Thanks

This will likely be an umbrella company and more than likely associated to the angncy themselves so they get money twice over. Search umbrella companies on google for an idea and then used the search function on MSE to search the same to get an idea as most questions have been covered before0
