Three pairs of trousers, all fit perfectly. Sizes on the labels...
Pair A: UK 8, US 0
Pair B: UK 4, US 0
Pair C: UK 6, US 2

It's because they use several manufacturers in different countries. Mens trousers of apparently the same length also vary greatly.

That's not specific to Gap: I find you have to try on clothes in most stores. I'm wearing a pair of dark blue boot cut jeans from Hollister. They are 1S (whatever that's supposed to be in normal terms). Thing is, they are exactly the same size (width and length) as a pair of light blue boot cut jeans - from the same range, in the same shop - that were marked 3S. The sales assistant couldn't explain it either. I'd picked up two pairs of 3S (which I'd been assured were the correct size) to try on and see what the different colours looked like... apparently what I actually needed to do was guess the true size.
Obviously, size labels are merely decorative and just for fun!! Terribly annoying. (Oh, and at Hollister, "S" presumably stands for "short" on the assumption that you are 7 ft tall... although it works well with high heeled shoes.)0
