What makes a good wedding?

The best wedding I went to is clearly remembered because it was a fun, relaxed and honest day. Noone was stressed about details, everyone contributed and it was a genuine good time.Happy chappy0

Thanks for all the replies! Much as I suspected - more about relaxing and enjoying than fiddling with co-ordinated favours, etc.!0

The WORST weddings I have been to have been the ones where lots of money have been spent. They end up like "corporate events" . The BEST ones have been "fun". Ones I remember are:
* where guests were asked to contribute a dish - this made me feel very much part of their day
* A friend asked me to make her bridesmaid dresses - again I was very honoured
* My aunt got married and used the empty house next door (with permision from the landlord) Again, we all contributed food, someone brought records and it was very relaxed.
I suppose for me what makes a great wedding is the "happy ever after" I love going to a wedding where the bride and groom look in love, and no body gives a monkeys if the bridesmaids match the napkins match the grooms waistcoats match the colour of the mother of the brides knickers!!!0 -
We got loads of compliments about our wedding - five years ago and people still say it was the nicest one they had ever been too. Here's what we did;
Only invited 18 people - limited to parents, siblings and friends who had known us over 10 years.
Found a small hotel which was licensed for weddings and arranged to book all 6 rooms for use by us, parents and 2 other sets of guests (others stayed locally)
This meant we had a 'country house' in gorgoeus setting all to our selves so it was like getting married at a private house but the hotel organised the food!
wedding on saturday at 1pm, buffet and chat afterwards in gardens then country walk (all guests into countryside/walking) whilst I had a nap and decorated dining room with fairy lights and flowers
evening meal, cake cutting etc at 7pm in hotel dining room
present opening in bar and ceremonial opening of the whisky we had specially blended for us (cost £50 for 2 bottles, one drunk at wedding, one saved for anniversary)
fireworks in the ground sof hotel - set off by husband and best man
Sunday - train ride on steam train setting off from lovely village 3 miles away
Other key things no dammed reciving line or formal seating! everyone just gathered in the hall. Husband to be went into the room we were getting married in and I walked down the spiral staircase looking down at my family waiting for me.
No photography! everyone had their own cameras and we made sure there were some disposable ones as well.
It was great with only 20 people in total it was a lovely chance to really talk to people and relax.
We tried to create a very informal, private, family affair - how people used to get married before the whole 100 peopl church do + 150 for a sit down buffet of bad food in an anonymous hotel kicked in!DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft
