Company Car Claim Mileage tax help

Hi,

Busy topic but havent found a true answer. (?)

I have a Company Car. I get paid 15 pence per mile.

I dont pay the higher rate in tax.

I have done 7,000 miles last FY and 7000 this FY.

A colleague has just claimed back £8500 for 5 years worth of mileage stating : Its the difference on the 15p we get from the company against the 45pHMRC allow.

Difference is that he is on the higher tax rate and he opted to take the allowance and provide his own car. he gets 15p also.

1. Am I entitled to claim anything?

2. If so, are there any examples out there how I can do it?

Much appreciated if anyone can hekp with this scenario.

Unlikely as the rates for those who have a company car are substantially lower. Depends on a few things though:

I am in the same position as you, given the company provide the car you are only entitled to the 15p per mile, the reason he claimed tax back was because he purchased the vehicle himself.
If your company offer a good allowance you may be better of buying your own vehicle and claim back 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles,my company offer £6000 allowance or a car plus 15p per mile,i took the car because they offered a Bmw 320 M sport.

    Hmmm.
I get £5000/yr car allowance but I buy my own car.
I then get 45p/mile when travelling to other than normal office address.
Last year I claimed about £8000. (Tax free as its an expense)

Interestingly, I took £6000 of the £8000 and got a 330D SE (since about 2000 was diesel).

OK, its a 2006 ... but I'm not sure its better to take the car.
The 330D does between 40-60 MPG so that still leaves me 30p/mile I can claim... so as long as I do a minimum milage a year it works out a lot better (other than it being a 6 year old car).
