Tax Return - Unable to pay

in Cutting tax
Hi All,
Last April I went self employed and remained that way for around 12 months, at which point I lost a contract that was a good 95% of my income.
That being said, I then spent 2-3 months trying to find additional self employed work and ultimately had to make the decision to go back to employed work.
Now I have been putting off filling in my tax return becuase it seems like a daunting task but also because I know I will not be able to pay whatever tax is due.
I suspect that it will be a high bill due to most of my income being a 'wage' for myself (basicly covering household expenses, rent, food, personal loans ect ect). So there were very little business expenses.
I do not have the money to pay this (literally living day to day at the mo), I did initially save the funds, but 6 months into my self employment I had to buy a new iMac and the rest pretty much went in the 2-3 months that I had no work.
any and all advise will be much appreciated
Thanks
RL

It's probably best that you do your return as soon as you are able. It won't affect the date the tax is due, but at least you'll have more of an idea what you're dealing with at that point.
Once you've submitted your return and you know how much you'll need to pay it'd probably be worthwhile speaking to HMRC's Payment Helpline

Hi, i,ve had exactly the same problem 3 years ago.
I rang the tax office, explained my situation, and they could not have been more helpful. They were willing to take installments, not much, just what you were comfortable with.
In the current financial situation they may be under more pressure to collect revenue but if you give them a call i think you will be suprised at how helpful they can be.0
