    Hi everyone
    Thanks for the replies
Lynz, we live in North Suffolk so a bit far away but thanks for the offer. I have taken your advice and put in a request to freecycle for a workstation. If I have no joy then I'll get one from argos for around £20, I've seen one that will do just fine.

As far as the hardrive is concerned, we can't power up windows at all, the screen is completely blue (in colour!) when we turn it on. I think I will get OH to phone some local companies it's just that everyone we have spoken to have said we will need to get the disc drivers from Sony and they are quite costly. Goodness knows why we weren't given them with the computer.

I think the dangerous spending thoughts are going away now. I really don't want to get in any further debt and that's why I am waiting until we have the money for the repairs however desperate I want to get it fixed NOW. We have DS's trip to pay for next month and every spare penny is going to that right now. We are not sure how much the final amount will be but it will be a maximum of £2400 so we need to ensure we have that.

Oh, the 'blue screen of death' isn't good......

How annoying that Sony have such a hold over you even after the computer is fully bought and paid for.

Well done on deciding to wait to get it repaired until you have the money to do it though.

OHH welcome back. How was NY?? I'm so sorry your return has been been clouded by the death of your computer.

Has your OH decided whether to stay on yet?

Oh dear showing my nos(e)y (sp?) side again :o and I just meant to welcome you back and say I'd missed your posts.

If you are at university, go to the technie people at the university, explain what happened and that you have vital information on your computer for your course, that you're not very technical minded, and ask if they can give you any advice.

It might be worth asking them if they know anyone who can fix the computer, or at least get your data out:)

They'd probably do it for £50.

When you say that the screen is blue, do you mean that it goes completely blue, without any writing on, as soon as you switch the computer on? Or do you see something before the screen goes blue, then it crashes and you get a blue screen with white writing on?
