Accountancy - career change?

  • I've been working in accountancy for 12 years and I'm qualified.

I have just been through trying to find a new job (finally got one after applying for everything for the last 2months!) and I found it really tough, I think you would find it difficult to break in the sector at the moment with no experience as the market is saturated with unemployed finance professionals!

Back to OP though and I agree with the other comments, get out of practice and work in industry. You learn a lot of different roles, I have picked up some HR and IT exposure along the way and progression or the opportunity is increased.

Or find a hobby, I hate working in accountancy but have been trapped by the money and the amount of time I have spent on my qualifications. I learnt a different hobby that is so far removed from Accountancy that I have something to look forward to outside work! :)

What is the best way to approach firms? I have seen plenty of jobs online with recruitment agencies, but most want people partly qualified. Is it worth me studying independently to begin with or is there any chance of getting a job first and studying simultaneously?

I am currently working as a teacher, have been for the last 8 years and wanting to escape the world of education. I am the main earner and we are getting married next year, so a huge drop in pay is not ideal but needed to keep me sane. I have a degree in maths.

    Many thanks.
Debt free other than a mortgage but still always wanting to save money :j.

Busy saving for my wedding July 2014 :o.

have you considered actuarial rather than accountancy? I've seen a few people transfer in (so to speak) and work out quite well. Actuaries are quite rare too so the salary drop wouldn't be as severe or for as long. I'm not an actuary but I guess to get into it I'd start applying speculatively to the insurance companies.
As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again

Scarlett O'Hara, I hadn't considered that but it is certainly something I shall look into. Thank you :).

or Pension ones! Insurance actuaries aren't the only type - with a maths degree you do have lots of options - but the market is tough out there!
