Extra Pennies at the Pump

Has anybody else noticed buying diesel quite often the price increases by 1p when the pump is put back in its holder.
I have been careful to take my finger off the trigger but it still happens.I know its only 1p but could happen 100,s of times a day at a busy Station so be a nice little profit Booster for the owner.
I have read a few explanations why it happens but don't understand why it has only happened in the last year and I have been filling cars for over 40 years

  • I actually have noticed this the odd time myself. I too hate going over as I then feel obliged to pay it and so maybe have to break another note.
I don't think they will get rich on it, apparently they make about a quarter of a pence per litre profit on fuel, the real income comes from the shop, but it is annoying none the less.

I find this quite irritating too. Our local Asda garage does not take the 1p if you are paying by cash :T , but does if you are paying by card.
  • Yes I have noticed this happening a few times recently!! A lot of garages ask for the penny now as well, which is a pain when you have no change. I sometimes feel like filling it 9.99 each time and waiting for my 1p back
  • If you went food shopping and your shopping cams to £20.01 you would have to pay the full amount. Why is diesel/petrol any different? If my fill-up comes to 1p over, I would pay.

These petrol stations are running a business NOT a charity....

You not paying....... does this mean you are stealing? 'cause you are not paying for something you have taken.

You can go into the fuel station and ask them to 'stop' the pump dead on the £20....they can do this!!

You've got the wrong end of the stick. This was on Watchdog a few months ago & it's not just diesel either. What's happening is that even if you release the pump lever when it's dead on,say £5,the pump will click up an extra 1p.Not 2p or 3p,1p even tho the pump stopped at £5.
I've had it happen to me a few times but in 99.9% of the cases, the 1p has been refused by the cashier, and it's not just Tesco this happens at.
  • There is no such thing as '00' on any pump anywhere!!!!!!!

IS there not a penny's worth of fuel residue lying in the curve of the hose from the last user???

    So no short changing!

Even if that were true, then you're still leaving a penny's worth for the next person.
