Stupid question re. scratchcards (sorry for being so dim!)

Im looking to get some christmas scratch cards to put in with presents but is there a time limit in which to claim any prizes you might win? I mean if i buy them now will they still be ok come Christmas

Sorry to be dim never ever bought one before

  • There are time limits for claiming prizes on scratch cards - the date is usually printed on the back of the card. Most Christmas themed cards should be ok until well into the new year but you could always ask the sales person to double check the date on the back for you before buying.

I don't think they will be out of date that quick. A few years ago we would buy a £1 scratchcard every Saturday and if it was a winner we kept it until Christmas and the winnings paid for our Christmas shopping lunch or cinema trip or something.

I don't buy Lottery Tickets, but I thought you could specify which draw the ticket was for. If that's right, you could buy it for the Saturday before, or after, Christmas ..........................
  • Lottery wins must be claimed within 6 months, not sure about scratch cards.
I did notice an advert at the supermarket suggesting giving scratcards as gifts.

I was wondering the same thing. I've never done the lottery or bought scratchcards until I decided to do Pots of Gold.

I asked in Sainsburys and the girl brought out a binder with photocopies of scratchcards in it and checked the ones I wanted to buy against it.

This was in September and she told me that mine didn't yet have a "use by" date allocated so they would be fine until at least February/March.

I understand that lottery tickets can be bought around 6/8 weeks in advance.

    HTH.
  • I think all scratch cards are the same...

prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the announced closure of the game

so six months or so :) hth
