    I've been Money Tipped!
Cycle, walk, or use public transport? Until people become aware that driving has environmental and social costs obviously I'm preaching to the unconvertible :wall:

I'm not claiming to be holier than thou, I drive and cycle, but at least I try to do so in a way that inconveniences other people as little as possible.

But then one could argue that those within walking distance from town or city centres have Better access to public transport and safe cycle routes, so should need cars (and the spaces) less than those communiting in. All such arguments are plainly ridiculous....which is why unless their is demonstrable need shown we have deregulated parking areas! People's needs from the areas are val
I'd whether it's because they live there or work there, or simply come to spend money there.

No-one has the right to the space outside their house, but equally it would be unfair to take someone's space every day.
If I was in the OP's situation I would park on the free road but in a different place each day.
Walking the width of up to 10 houses extra wouldn't hurt, and it would mean people were only inconvenienced once a fortnight which they can't really complain about.

Cycle - really only applicable if you live relatively near work - can't realistiacally cycle any more than about 10 mile max to work each day. This would also require shower facilities in work, and somewhere to store a bicylce, and a way to get to work not via a motorway.

Walk - againe only possible if you live near work

Public Transport - where i live it is a joke - don't even think it would be possible for me to get to work for 9am on public transport, and if it was i'd probably have to leave at 6 and wouldn;t be home to 9!

Unfortunately we don't all have other options - driving is often the only option. I live 40 mile from work and go via a motorway - however we do actually have a staff car park.

Until recently it was only 20 mile but have recently had to move (although only temporary) so I could be with my husband who works 40 miles in the other direction - I suppose we are being ver unenvironmentally friendly travelling 160 mile a day between us (at a significant cost to us - but its worth it, and the only alternative is for 1 of us to give up work!)

I do not see the problem with parking in any public street - they are public streets available for everyone, and if they are in a commuter area, if I didn't park in it someone else would most likely, so me not parking there is not making a difference.

Why do you have a car? If you are so aware of the enviromental and social costs? Can you not walk cycle or use public transport for everything you currently use the car for?

    just an up date guys....

only one more day to go for this week so I have saved £14 so far (£17.50 by tomorrow night).

the mornings are easier than the nights... it's been a nice quiet walk in with some cool dry mornings and lovely wintery sunlight. the nights are dark and lots of traffic - all in big queues!!! so i have a little game seeing how far along the road i can get before they overtake me.

I very rarely use my car, and when it's parked (off road :)) it doesn't have any environmental or social costs. I do as many, if not more, miles on my bike and use it for work, play and shopping.

For most of my life I have cycled to work. I also have a cargo bike which will take either a passenger or a large load of shopping. When my wife, who also chooses to cycle, was unable to cycle to work she had a lift into work on the back of my cargo bike. I don't usually use my car unaccompanied within a radius of several miles unless it's to transport something bulky or heavy.

I did have a motorbike but used it so little that after a near miss by a speeding lorry and a flat battery from lack of use I let it go.

I did admit in a recent thread I'd love to have a chauffeur, as I don't really enjoy driving, but that's just wishful thinking.

The other alternative no-one else has mentioned considering is car sharing.

I see lots of cars going in the same direction most days with only the driver in them. It can't be that difficult to organise a car share with today's social networking, and there are lots of car sharing websites too.

joanie, good luck with your walk into work. I think you'll find it becomes the most pleasurable part of your journey.

Is it only me that thinks a car that has been manufactured and then is not used is the biggest waste of resource of all. Think of all the resources involved in manufacturing a car!? If you decide own a car, you might as well use it for your journeys...
