Paid less, advice needed!

I’ve been working for a company for three weeks now, during the interview and in the job advertisement it was stated that the starting wage was £7 an hour. However upon receiving my wage packet I noticed I was only paid £6.19 an hour. I work 42 hour weeks and this makes a huge difference to me.

At first I believed this was a mistake, however upon talking to someone who started at the same time as me I have discovered that they were rung prior their start date and informed that the company could no longer afford to pay them £7 as anticipated and asked if it was OK that they was paid £6.19, they felt they had no choice but to say yes.

Hopefully I will be talking to the manager on Monday, can anyone offer me some advice on how to approach this? I feel that because I have not got a contract yet that I will have no rights. I love my job, I’m a recent graduate and feel this is a fantastic first stepping stone in my career. I’m just afraid if I disagree with this situation too much, I could lose my job, however I don’t want to be a push over. (To be honest I feel that the drop in pay was planned all along, people who are already working at the company are earning £6.19, why would new starters be on more :( )

  • My view:
Your employment contract is for £7/hour.
When you speak with your manager on Monday, say you realise that payroll made a mistake and would your manager please get them to correct it.
If they don't agree, come back here to let us know.
  • The advert and what they offered you the job at are two totally different things. What rate was the job offer made to you at?
  • Unpalatable as it may be - you have been there three weeks. Do you want to make it to four?

If you love the work and it's a stepping stone - treat it as such. You have just had a valuable lesson in the world of work. Don't forget it. Employers don't care about you. So you don't owe them anything either.
