Possible income tax refund - but where do I ask?

I moved house about 14 months ago, and left my mobile number as a contact address.
The new residents contacted me a couple of weeks ago to say I'd had a letter they'd accidentally opened, and it was a cheque for several hundred pounds from HMRC, and they'd forward it on to me.
The letter hasn't arrived, though the couple at my old house say they sent it on two days after requesting my address.

My question is - who do I need to talk to about this? If I call up the tax office for my old place will they be able to track it down, or do I have to give up on ever getting the cash back?

(I'm also not sure where I over paid - I'm assuming it was my old employer with either the wrong code, or it was triggered when I moved jobs about 6 months ago)

Can anyone help?

Call HMRC right away, they can cancel cheque and reissue.
  • Thanks for your help with this! Will they be able to track down what I'm owed using my NI number and other details, though - I've no clue about any of the details specific to this check.
