How many copies of 'The Highway Code' can you fit in the boot of a VW Golf?

1820 1960 or 1710

I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

    Thanks for posting becky004.

    The terms state:

Answer has been calculated based on the dimensions of 'The Official Highway Code' (Sept 2007 Edition) as stated by Amazon UK and the boot capacity of a 2012 VW Golf S

So, I looked on Amazon and found the book dimensions to be:

    Product Dimensions: 20.8 x 11.2 x 1 cm

Golf S boot capacity according to volkswagen.co.uk:

Luggage capacity with rear seats upright (litres)* 350
*method using 200 x 100 x 50 mm blocks (With space saver spare wheel)

Any mathematics experts able to answer this please?!?
  • 20.8 x 11.2 x 1 = 233 cubic cms (rounded up)

    350 litres - 350,000 cubic cms

    350,000/233 = 1502 which isn't any of the options!

So I think they must be using different figures somewhere. :(

That wouldn't work because the books are a solid of a certain size not a fluid if you see what I mean. You need to look at the dimensions of the boot and the dimensions of the books.

  • No, which means, there should be even LESS books fitting in, but all their figures are higher
  • I've gone with the 'lucky' middle answer - 1820.

    Fair point

Just had a look and I'm getting the capacity to be 395 litres

    which would then be 395000/233 = 1695

which still isn't an option but is closer ;)

Using this converter , and Bricktops dimensions, one book = 232 milliletres
    232 x 4 gives us close to a litre , so 4 books x 350 and we get 1400
    closer to B) 1710

    Have I got this right ? ;)

Someone told them they couldn't get their calculations to match any of the answers and this is the reply they got from Zipcar:

Don't worry too much about the maths as when we were stuffing the boot full of the Highway Codes they got a bit squished so the dimensions maybe a bit 'off'. I'd recommend just giving it your best guess!

Well that sucks if they are going to this kind of comp it shouldn't be a multiple guess question. Why bother to say what type of car and which book?
