A quick search online shows offered to buy prices of about £120 for a half sovereign. No idea if rings make more or less. There are plenty of traders who will rip you off by paying less than it is worth. Why not look in the shops and see what they are selling for first as I doubt they depreciate. Gold prices are rising and above $1700 an ounce now.0

Current scrap price for 9ct gold is £399 per ounce at trade but consumer is slightly less. Most soverigns are 18ct so £964 per oz, but remember that the price you get will be less because of the mounting and whether it has to be melted.
Spot price is around the £1000 mark per troy oz now.
However, rings are graded according to rarity. See here : http://www.goldsovereigns.co.uk/forsalerings.html

Yes, our point exactly. Current scrap 9ct gold (and this would be 18 if it WAS a soverign) is more than £58. The jewellers suspect it's stolen and wont trade with you. The price was ridiculously low to discourage you.
Go to a reputable professional jeweller that specifically buys and sells these items.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Look at the top right of the page, click on income/family, then click on gold selling. Scroll to bottom of that page and click the link for Hatton Garden Metals.
I sold my old gold with them and the money was in my account in 48hrs.
Today's price is £12.50 per gram 9ct, £25 for 18ct and half sovereign is £122.0 -
You might want to try a coin merchant instead. I have 6 gold sovereigns, a friend in a jewellers said they would only buy for scrap but coin merchants buy to keep as a coin.
The more coins that have been scrapped now makes some of certain hallmark years more valuable i.e I have 1997,2x 1998, 2001, 2005, and 2007. I won't part with mine, as they are childrens birth years and gift to DH. You might be able to find a coin collector or merchant in phonebook. Hope that helps.Mortgage: Aug 12 £114,984.74 - Jun 14 £94000.00 = Total Payments £20984.74
